PM Celebrates Women’s History Month + She Podcasts!

March is known for a number of things. March Madness and St. Patrick’s Day may immediately come to mind for some, but did you know that it is also Women’s History Month!?!

We love and appreciate all of the women in the Podcast Movement family. We wish that we could give shoutouts to all of them in this newsletter, but that would make for one long post! Instead, we will do for a few what we wish we could do for so many!

In this newsletter we highlight ten women podcasters that rock, and announce the involvement of two of them at this years event in Anaheim!

Jaime Legagneur

10) Jaime Legagneur

One of our favorite podcasters that we met this year. Jaime has great energy and LOVES podcasting! She can’t get enough. You cannot miss her enthusiasm when you check out her show Curve the Cube which shares inspirational and motivational stories. Jaime is also the organizer for the Palm Beach podcasters meetup in South Florida! Definitely connect with Jaime at PM17 if you want to laugh, take a goofy picture and make a new best friend!

Josie Ong

9) Josie Ong

Josie Ong is the host of the popular Affirmation Pod show which is a podcast for self care and reflection. Josie uses affirmations, meditations, visualizations and actionable tips to help listeners to manage negative thinking, limiting beliefs and their inner critic effectively and consistently. Josie is also the organizer for the Vancouver Podcasters Meetup in British Columbia! Josie’s little boy is adorable as well.

Leah Darrow

8) Leah Darrow

You may recognize Leah Darrow as a reality show contestant from America’s Next Top Model. Leah is now the host of the Do Something Beautiful podcast which shares stories from inspirational people that add true beauty to the world! A recent review had this to say about Leah’s show, “A great podcast for finding true beauty in a world that has been swallowed up in the lies of materialism and vanity.” Leah travels and speaks a lot, and may be coming to a town near you!

Civilla Morgan

7) Civilla Morgan

Civilla Morgan is the host of the 21st Century Hannah podcast. The show discusses childlessness not by choice and infertility. It is the story of a large segment of society that is largely ignored and misunderstood. Civilla has lived this story. This show provides understanding, empathy, and grace for anyone who has experienced infertility. Civilla is also the primary organizer for the Central Florida Podcasters meetup! Side note: Civilla may or may not have more podcasting t-shirts than you do.

Jennifer Swanson

6) Jennifer Swanson

The communication diva! Jenn hosts the Communication Diva Podcast which provides workplace, job search and self-improvement topics that help you to succeed in the workplace (and in life!) through great and more effective communication. Jenn has been guilty of driving over 2 hours (each way) to attend a Podcast Movement meetup! We feel that level of commitment definitely communicates success!

Aimee Joshua

5) Aimee Joshua

Disclaimer – When you first meet Aimee Joshua at Podcast Movement she will likely ask you to hold up a fun homemade “Chasing Dreams” sign and take a picture! You should do it because you will be in great company! Aimee is not only appreciated as the host of the top rated/ranked Chasing Dreams podcast, but she also has an amazing reputation as an interviewer.

Dominique Townsend

4) Dominique Townsend

Dominique is the host of Diver[C]ity which is recorded at the Nashville Entrepreneur Center. The podcast focuses on increasing awareness of the need for diversity and inclusion in the technology, entrepreneurship, healthcare, and corporate environments within the Music City. Domonique is also the founder of Meltdown Mama which is an organization that strives to transform the lives of ambitious working mothers who seek to rise in their career while maintaining a high quality life!

Amy Robles

3) Amy Robles

Amy has figured this podcasting thing out. Why? She is all about building authentic relationships. She is always encouraging others and willing to help whenever possible. Amy’s podcast is no different. Think Enriched shares steps to help organize, focus, and take care of those in your life while still making time for you. This show is the perfect fit for laughter and personal development, planning, priorities, time management, family, faith, and a whole lotta sass! Definitely connect with Amy this summer in Anaheim!

Addy Saucedo

2) Addy Saucedo

Addy is no stranger to podcasting. She hosted the DO IT podcast and a show for Audiobooks.com. Addy also is the creator of The Podcast Planner, which is a guide to help podcasters create the right content and do it with consistency. Over four years of hosting podcasts, producing and managing over fifteen other podcasts, Addy witnessed many fellow podcasters lose momentum and give up. This led to the creation of her thoughtfully designed templates within the planner.

1) “She Podcasts”

It would be wrong to not acknowledge the achievements and leadership of Elsie Escobar and Jessica Kupferman. The She Podcasts Facebook Group started in 2014. It is now well over 5,000 members and impossible to ignore. Elsie and Jessica have cultivated a thriving community for women podcasters to get quick answers, tips and resources from one another. Podcast Movement is proud to have Elsie and Jessica speak at this year’s event this summer in Anaheim!

SHE PODCASTS AT PM17

We’re proud to announce that we’ve partnered with the team at She Podcasts to bring two amazing sessions to the PM stage this August.

Elsie Escobar will be moderating an all star panel on The Culture of Podcasting: Exploring The Impact of Podcasts in Society and Culture.
The future and growth of podcasting is often discussed by the podcasting industry and public media around data that solely focuses on advertising, monetization and podcast download/listener metrics. The problems to be solved are heavily biased toward *the discovery problem* and the so-called *wild west* of podcast metrics measurement and almost exclusively from the producer, creator side of things.

Issues that the industry has not addressed are how socioeconomics and cognitive behavior impact the reality of podcast growth from the listener perspective, regardless of new discovery and measurement tools. This session will face these issues head on!

Jessica Kupferman is giving a solo presentation called Are You Ready for Sponsorships? How to Get Started Making Money TODAY!

  • What measurements really matter and what to STOP keeping track
  • What advertisers truly value from podcast advertising;
  • How to put together a pitch that potential sponsors can’t resist;
  • How to overcome the most common sponsor objections;
  • How you can measure a successful campaign;
  • What advertisers expect you to take care of, and what their responsibility is,
  • What you can do if your show ISN’T quite ready for a full-on paid sponsor yet;
  • And much more!

Please feel free to tweet congratulations to Elsie, Jessica and the rest of our Women Podcast Rock Stars above!

Who was not on the list but should have been? Please feel free to sing their praises and give them a shoutout in the Podcast Movement Facebook group!

We have more great updates coming next week!

Until then,
Team PM17

Two Awesome Tuesday Workshops

Podcast Movement has offered various workshops over the last few years the day before PM officially begins, in order to provide additional value on topics that may not be covered in full detail during the event. These add-on workshops have proven to be awesome experiences for all who’ve been involved!.

We are excited to announce two of the four workshops that will be available this year on Tuesday, March 22, as well as an awesome new feature for all attendees!

So you’ve decided you want to start a podcast – awesome! Now comes the tough part: putting a plan together to help you pull off a successful launch. Starting a podcast comes with many moving pieces: equipment, software, format, frequency, scheduling, publishing, promoting – it can be overwhelming. Not to mention the fact that launching your podcast is only the beginning.

This full day workshop will be a progressive, step-by-step deep dive that any brand new (or just getting started) podcaster will get a ton out of!

This workshop is hosted by Podcasters Paradise, and is being lead by John Lee Dumas and Kate Erickson of EOFire.

Have you told anyone to #TryPod lately?

This month the hosts of hundreds of shows including Stuff You Should Know, Planet Money, Missing Richard Simmons, Crimetown and many more are encouraging listeners to introduce a friend, relative or coworker to a new podcast, and, show them how to listen if they don’t know how. Undisclosed Podcast announced as headline speakers! Plus, your questions answered!

Happy Tuesday PM Family,

We’re excited to have two big PM17 announcements, with the first being the revealing of our next Podcast Movement keynote speakers.

Rabia, Colin and Susan from Undisclosed Podcast

Once best known as the person who brought the Adnan Syed case to PM alumni Sarah Koenig for the hit podcast Serial, Rabia Chaudry has since become a bona fide podcast powerhouse. Along with cohosts Colin Miller and Susan Simpson, the Undisclosed Podcast investigates wrongful convictions, and the U.S. criminal justice system, by taking a closer look at the perpetration of a crime, its investigation, the trial, and ultimate verdict…and finding new evidence that never made it to court.

The podcast made headlines in 2016 when Simpson’s work for the show uncovered evidence that ultimately got the conviction of Adnan Syed, the subject of Undisclosed’s season one, thrown out.

Now in their third season, these three have an amazing story of going from no podcast experience but tons of passion, to one of the most popular shows in the world with millions of downloads. We’re excited to welcome the team from Undisclosed to the stage for the first time this summer in Anaheim!

You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers (times two)

Last year we were excited to debut a new featured stage at Podcast Movement that we called the Q&A Stage. During each breakout session, we featured a different expert in a variety of podcasting topics, and invited you to bring any and all questions. Some of the experts were:

This year, we’re even more excited, as we will not only have the return of the Q&A stage, but also the interactive Solutions Stage. This stage will feature interactive demos and sessions that invite you to be a part of the action.

Think of these as mini-workshops throughout the three days. Attend one, or attend them all! But whatever you do, keep an eye out for Q&A Stage and Solutions Stage expert announcements as we get closer to PM17!

Register to be a part of all the big keynote sessions, 20+ Q&A and Solutions sessions, and everything else taking place this August!

What topics should we cover?

As mentioned above, we’ve got two stages with amazingly interactive content taking place all week at PM17. But we need your help! LET US KNOW WHAT TOPICS YOU WANT TO SEE COVERED IN THESE SESSIONS!

Please send an e-mail to [email protected], or just reply to this one, giving us your thoughts!

Next week, we will be discussing all the awesome things we’ve got planned for you starting Tuesday, August 22, the day before Podcast Movement. Plan on getting to Anaheim early to take part in all the action!

Until Next Week,

Team PM17

Calling all Hall of Fame and PM17 speaker submissions!

Greetings PM Family,

This week we are excited to be discussing the 2017 Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame nominations, and the PM17 Speaker Submissions deadline next week.

Academy of Podcasters Hall of Fame Nominations

The honor of being inducted into the Academy Of Podcasters Hall Of Fame has quickly become one of the biggest honors a podcaster can receive. It shows that they went above and beyond the norm for an extended period of time, and have contributed to the podcast industry as a whole.

Many inductees were present at the inception of podcasting, while others helped podcasting grow to what it is today.

The foundational requirements for being considered for induction into the Academy Of Podcasters Hall Of Fame are the following:

  1. Involvement in podcasting for at least 10 years, either as a podcaster or an active member of the podcast industry
  2. Promoted the art of podcasting over those 10 years
  3. Podcasting is better off because of their contributions and involvement
  4. Thought of highly by their podcasting peers

Being nominated for induction into the Academy Of Podcasters Hall Of Fame is the first step. All nominees go through the voting process where existing Hall Of Famers, and members of the Academy of Podcasters, will vote.

The top six nominees will have the honor of joining the elite group of members in the Academy of Podcasters Hall Of Fame.

You are invited to nominate yourself, or other podcasters using the nomination form below:

PM17 Speaker Submissions

The deadline for Podcast Movement 2017 speaker submissions is Tuesday, February 28 (one more week!). We encourage you to get your presentation ideas submitted as soon as possible.

We have received hundreds of submissions already, with many of them on marketing and monetization topics. We encourage more session submissions on content creation, technical and industry topics. You can submit your presentation ideas here:

January 24 – Podcast Movement Weekly – Dan Carlin is Coming

Happy Tuesday, podcasters!

It’s been a historical and polarizing week in the US, however we think today’s announcement from the Podcast Movement team is something that everyone can get behind!

It was Common Sense to have this speaker headline
Podcast Movement 2017

One of the most popular and most downloaded podcasts of all time is a show that does not have a large catalogue of episodes. In fact, oftentimes months go by between new episodes, yet it always manages to stay at the top of the charts. Not many podcasts can get away with this, but then again, calling Hardcore History “just a podcast” would be doing a disservice to the works of art that each episode truly is.

We’ve attempted for three years to bring this podcaster to the PM stage with no success. However, now we are excited and honored to finally announce that Dan Carlin will be a headline speaker in Anaheim this August at Podcast Movement 2017!

Dan Carlin is an American political commentator and podcaster. Once a full-time radio host, Carlin eventually took his show to the Internet, and he now hosts two wildly popular independent podcasts: Hardcore History and Common Sense.

Part storyteller, part analyst, Carlin has mastered the art of looking at subjects from multiple angles and dissecting and thinking about them in original ways. He isn’t afraid to go deep or to inject historical context into modern debates. Whether it’s history or current events he’s discussing, his passion is contagious, his approach refreshing and his ideas tickle your brain in all the right places.

It is rare for Dan to take the stage at live events, and we’re honored to be welcoming Dan to the PM stage on Wednesday, August 23 in Anaheim.

Last year we were excited to host dozens of commercial radio hosts and executives, and let them see what the podcast movement was all about. This year, we’re excited to formally welcome them with a special full day of radio-centric podcast sessions at the Broadcasters Meet Podcasters track, presented in conjunction with Jacobs Media on Thursday, August 24.

Jacobs Media President Fred Jacobs explains, “We loved Podcast Movement in Chicago last year and were struck by the breadth and energy of the space. The goal is to get radio broadcasters involved, given the industry’s ability to create compelling audio content, promote it, and generate revenue around it. It just makes sense to bring these two worlds together to help broadcasters – and podcasters – elevate their game.”
